Chiropractic and Chronic Headaches – A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial

Headaches are a common disorder and often are difficult to manage.  Frequently, headaches result in patients taking multiple medications with limited results.  There are many reasons for headaches to occur and themedical research is showing that quite often the cervical spine is the primary source.  

In a recent study by Haas,Spegman, Peterson, Aickin, andVavrek (2010), the authors discuss that the research has shown that spinal manipulation is effective in the treatment of headache. Spinal manipulation is considered a conservative approach to the management of spine disorders.  The results of the study showed, “…the average SMT [spinal manipulation] patient could cut the number of headaches in half by 8 weeks” (Haas et al., 2010, p. 126).
