Advantages and Disadvantages of Implants

by Dr. James Springer 3. May 2010 12:13

Advantages of Implants:

  • An implant is most similar to a natural tooth.
  • Adjacent teeth do not have to be involved in placement procedure.
  • Implants may decrease or help prevent shrinkage of the jawbone from tooth loss.

Disadvantages of Implants:

  • Implants are not intended for everyone.
  • Implants placement takes longer and may require more dental visits than alternative procedures.

Your dentist usually determines if implants are appropriate for you.  Sometimes the dentist may refer you to a specialist for additional care:

  • Prosthodontist – restoration and placement of teeth missing
  • Oral or Maxillofacial surgeon – dental surgery
  • Periodontist – treatment of hard and soft tissue around the teeth

Trivia:

  • A sneeze zooms out of your mouth at over 600mph!
  • Most tooth loss in people under 35 year of age is caused by athletic trauma, fights or accidents.
